From Story to Song: Finding Your Starting Point

A song can begin with a memory, a conversation, a place or a phrase that stays with you. It may be prompted by a scent or a sound that transports you from the present state to a former place, feeling or relationship. You do not need a complete melody or finished lyrics to start.
Begin with one moment
Think about a person, place or experience you would like to capture. Write down what happened, what you noticed and why it matters to you.
Listen for meaningful words
Look through your notes for a short phrase that carries the heart of the story. It might become a title, a chorus or a repeated line.
Try speaking the words aloud
Notice the natural rhythm of the words. You may hear a pattern that suggests a melody or a way of shaping the lyrics.
Keep the first draft simple
Use your first draft to explore an idea rather than perfect it. You can revise the words, structure and music as the story develops.
Storytelling through music can be a way to share experiences and connect with an audience. The most important first step is finding the story you want to tell.
