Five Simple Ways to Improve Your English Writing

Clear writing does not have to be complicated. A few small habits can make emails, assignments, reports and other documents easier to understand.
1. Start with your main message
Before writing, ask yourself what your reader needs to know or do. Put that information near the beginning.
2. Keep sentences manageable
If a sentence contains several ideas, try dividing it into two. Shorter sentences can help readers follow your meaning.
3. Choose familiar words
Use straightforward language when possible. Specialist terms can be useful, but explain them if your audience may not know them.
4. Read your work aloud
Reading aloud helps you notice repeated words, missing information and sentences that are difficult to follow.
5. Allow time for a final review
Take a break before proofreading, then check names, dates, spelling, punctuation and formatting.
If a document is especially important, an independent proofreader can help identify issues you may have missed.
